Abstract

Starting from the suggestion that musical engagement is not merely a matter of controversial texts, this contribution begins to repopulate a kind of popular music that is too often taken for granted. It proposes that the written press has an important role to play there and focuses on statements asserting the political engagement of musical products or artists. Drawing on a media archive, this contribution focuses on the heterogeneous ways in which Quebec cultural press articulate “emerging music” to one form or another of political engagement. Four figures are outlined: the politics of the text, of the context, of the cultural industries and of conscientisation.
